KATHMANDU: The Election Commission has directed authorities to bring medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai under investigation for allegedly spreading misleading information. The Commission sent a letter on Sunday to the Cyber Bureau under the Nepal Police, instructing it to initiate a probe after concluding that Prasai disseminated false narratives regarding the Commission’s decision to recognize the pro–special convention faction of the Nepali Congress. According to the Commission, Prasai publicly claimed that political parties had obtained official recognition by paying money to the Election Commission, an allegation it described as baseless and misleading. The Commission warned that such statements could undermine public trust in the electoral system and raise doubts about the Commission’s neutrality and credibility. Expressing serious concern, it emphasized that spreading unfounded allegations and false information against a constitutional body is against the law. The Commission has therefore instructed the Cyber Bureau to investigate the digital content and remarks circulated through cyber platforms and take legal action in accordance with existing laws.
