KATHMANDU: Manchester City strengthened their chances of reaching the Carabao Cup final with a 2-0 victory over defending champions Newcastle United in the first leg of the semi-final. Eight-time winners City took the lead in the 53rd minute through Antoine Semenyo, who recently joined from Bournemouth. The forward finished from close range after a well-delivered cross by Jeremy Doku. Despite creating several good chances, Newcastle failed to find the back of the net. Yoane Wissa’s header and a powerful strike from captain Bruno Guimarães both hit the crossbar, while Wissa also missed another close-range opportunity. City sealed the win deep into injury time, as substitute Rayan Cherki doubled the lead in the ninth minute of added time. The second leg between the two sides will be played on Feb 4 at City’s home ground, the Etihad Stadium.
