The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence platforms such as ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini has led to a global shortage of high-capacity random access memory (RAM), pushing prices sharply higher across international markets. Over recent months, demand for advanced memory has surged as AI-driven large language models and data-center infrastructure continue to expand at an unprecedented pace. Industry analysts say the shortage is being driven by the growing memory requirements of AI systems, cloud computing, and large-scale data centers. These technologies rely heavily on high-capacity and high-performance RAM, significantly increasing pressure on global supply chains. The world’s three largest memory manufacturers—Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron Technology—are currently prioritising AI- and data-center-focused production. As a result, supply of consumer-grade RAM used in personal computers and laptops has tightened. Due to lower profit margins, at least one major manufacturer is reported to have scaled back or halted production of certain consumer-grade memory products. With supply constrained, RAM prices have surged globally. In several international electronics markets, the price of 16GB RAM modules has more than tripled compared to last year. Modules that previously sold at affordable rates are now being offered at significantly higher prices, making upgrades increasingly difficult for consumers. Similar trends have been reported across multiple regions, with prices of DDR4 and DDR5 memory rising by close to 100 percent since last summer. Retailers say both fourth- and fifth-generation double data rate memory have seen sharp price increases, reflecting sustained demand and limited availability. Higher-capacity modules are particularly affected as enterprise and AI customers absorb a large share of global production. Experts warn that pressure on the RAM market is unlikely to ease soon. With long-term demand from artificial intelligence, cloud services, and data centers expected to remain strong, memory manufacturers are likely to stay focused on high-margin enterprise products. As a result, consumer-level RAM prices are projected to remain elevated throughout 2026. The situation highlights how the global technology landscape is being reshaped by artificial intelligence, with rising demand for computing power and memory resources now influencing prices and availability far beyond the AI sector itself. The post Rising Use of ChatGPT and Gemini Triggers Global Shortage of High-Capacity RAM first appeared on epardafas.com.
