The government has clarified the limits on Nepali and Indian currency that Nepali and Indian citizens are allowed to carry while travelling between Nepal and India. According to a notice published in the Nepal Gazette, Nepali and Indian citizens may carry an unlimited amount of Nepali currency and Indian banknotes of denominations below INR 100 while travelling to India. However, Indian currency notes of INR 200 and INR 500 denominations that have been in circulation since November 9, 2016 may be carried across the border up to a maximum of INR 25,000 per person, either from India to Nepal or from Nepal to India. The notice further states that Indian currency notes of INR 500 and INR 1,000 denominations that were in circulation before November 9, 2016 are completely prohibited from any form of transaction. The Indian government had announced demonetisation of INR 500 and INR 1,000 notes on that date. In the case of Nepali currency, carrying amounts beyond the limit prescribed by Nepal Rastra Bank is not permitted. Indian currency is also prohibited from being carried to or sent to countries other than India. Foreign currency obtained through licensed individuals or institutions via foreign exchange transactions in accordance with the law may, however, be taken out of Nepal or sent abroad. The notice also states that foreign nationals who need to carry or send foreign currency exceeding the limit set by Nepal Rastra Bank must declare the cash amount to customs officials upon entry into Nepal and obtain certification. The government said the clarification aims to regulate currency transactions at border points and ensure they remain systematic, transparent, and in line with the law.The post Limits Set on Carrying Nepali and Indian Currency Across Nepal–India Border first appeared on epardafas.com.
