RSP removes Gen Z activist Tashi Lhazom from PR list - english.makalukhabar.com
KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has removed the name of Gen Z activist and Himalayan environmental and cultural researcher Tashi Lhazom from its proportional representation closed list. The Election Commission has confirmed the change. According to party sources, Lhazom’s name was placed high on the list but was removed without her consent. The decision is reportedly linked to geopolitical sensitivities. Lhazom joined the RSP following the Gen Z movement. She hails from the Limi Valley of Humla district and has been actively working on issues related to Himalayan ecology, indigenous culture, and climate change. Earlier, in 2025, plans to appoint her as Minister for Women, Children, and Senior Citizens had sparked controversy. Social media users questioned her identity, language, and nationality, while some linked her to the Free Tibet movement, claiming it could trigger concerns from China. Sources at the time had stated that the Chinese side had expressed unease, arguing that her potential appointment could affect bilateral relations. It was also reported that then Chinese Ambassador Chen Song held discussions with then Prime Minister Sushila Karki and other ministers regarding her name. Party insiders say the same issue resurfaced in recent days, prompting the RSP to remove her from the list at the last moment.
