Nearly 2,000 candidates are set to contest Bangladesh’s 13th general election scheduled for next month, according to the country’s Election Commission. The commission released updated figures on Tuesday night after completing the processes of nomination submission, scrutiny, appeals, withdrawals, and finalisation of the candidate list. Following the withdrawal deadline, 1,967 candidates are confirmed to be contesting in 298 of Bangladesh’s 300 constituencies. Election officials said the total number of candidates is expected to rise further once the remaining two constituencies are finalised. The withdrawal deadline for those seats has been extended to January 26 due to an ongoing legal dispute over constituency boundary delimitation. Earlier, around 3,000 nomination papers were collected from 69 returning officers by prospective candidates seeking to contest the polls, which are scheduled to be held on February 12. The Election Commission has also said that more than 127 million voters have been registered for the upcoming election. This will be the country’s first general election since former prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left Bangladesh in August 2024.The post Around 2,000 Candidates to Contest Bangladesh’s General Election first appeared on epardafas.com.
