A total of 85 candidates listed by various political parties under the proportional representation PR system for the upcoming House of Representatives HoR elections withdrew their names by the deadline on Monday, according to the Election Commission. The candidates were among those included in the closed lists submitted by political parties on December 28 and 29. The commission had set Monday as the final day for withdrawals. The Election Commission said 21 candidates from the Janata Samajwadi Party and 20 from the Janamat Party withdrew their names from the PR closed lists. Candidates from CPN UML, Nepali Communist Party, Pragatisheel Loktantrik Party and Rastriya Prajatantra Party also withdrew. The Janata Samajwadi Party and the Loktantrik Samajwadi Party removed some candidates from their lists following adjustments made after the merger of the two parties. The commission said there may be minor changes in the closed lists during the final announcement. The revised closed lists will be made public on January 18 for protests or claims, which will be examined before the final list is published on February 3. A total of 64 political parties submitted PR closed lists to the Election Commission for the House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5. Of them, 54 parties are using their own election symbols, while 10 will use a common symbol. Of the total 275 seats in the House of Representatives, 110 will be filled through the proportional representation system and 165 through the first past the post system. Altogether, 93 political parties had applied to contest the elections under the PR system.
