World Day of Social Justice

February 19, 2025

Every year, on February 20th, the world observes World Social Justice Day. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of promoting fairness, equality, and justice for all individuals, regardless of their background, gender, race, or socioeconomic status. The United Nations established this day in 2007. The day highlights the need to address issues such as poverty, unemployment, exclusion, and inequality that exist in societies worldwide.

What is Social Justice?

International Labor Organization (2023) states, “Social justice is about fairness, equality for everyone and having a voice and the agency to shape one’s own life. This includes equal access to opportunities, human rights, access to justice within a society and the benefits of growth regardless of one’s ethnicity, gender, religion, race, disability, or socioeconomic position.”

Why Social Justice Matters

Social justice is the foundation of a peaceful and prosperous world. It ensures that everyone has access to basic human rights, opportunities, and resources. However, millions of people still face discrimination, exploitation, and marginalization worldwide. The World Day of Social Justice encourages governments, organizations, and individuals to take action to fill these gaps and create a more inclusive society.

The theme for 2025: “Empowering Inclusion: Bridging Gaps for Social Justice”

Every year, the day is highlighted by a specific theme that addresses and encourages action to tackle pressing global challenges. Past themes include “Global Coalition for Social Justice: Bridging Gaps, Building Alliances” and “Overcoming Barriers and Unleashing Opportunities for Social Justice.” These themes emphasize the need to adapt to changing times while ensuring that no one is left behind.

The theme highlights the need to include marginalized groups and remove the barriers that stop them from fully participating in society. It stresses the importance of closing the gaps in access to opportunities, resources, and services. The goal is to create a fairer society by addressing inequalities and ensuring everyone has an equal chance, regardless of background or circumstances.

Addressing Social Issues in Nepal

The government of Nepal, along with local and international organizations, is working to create fairer development and social justice. Their focus is on important issues like climate change, protecting the environment, and ensuring equal rights for everyone, especially those who are most vulnerable, such as women, children, youth, and people living in poverty.

The World Day of Social Justice is a call to action for all of us to work towards a world where everyone can live with dignity and respect.
