Every year on October 24, the world observes United Nations Day to mark the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945. This day celebrates the creation of the United Nations, a global organization founded to promote peace, development, and cooperation among countries following the devastation of World War II.

The Birth of the United Nations

After two world wars in the span of just three decades, leaders across the globe recognized the urgent need for an international body to prevent future conflicts. On October 24, 1945, the UN Charter was ratified by a majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council. Since then, this day has symbolized hope for a better world through dialogue, multilateralism, and shared responsibility.

The Mission and Impact

The United Nations works across a wide range of issues that affect humanity. From maintaining international peace and security to addressing climate change, humanitarian crises, public health, and human rights, the UN plays a central role in global governance. Its agencies such as World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) work on the ground in countries across the world. They provide assistance, set global standards, and coordinate international responses.

A Platform for All Nations

With 193 member states, the UN provides a platform for countries, regardless of their size or power and can voice their perspectives. The General Assembly, Security Council, and Economic and Social Council are among its main organs where major decisions and resolutions are discussed and passed. It is also the place where new ideas about global cooperation, sustainable development, and peacekeeping are shaped.

In a world that faces complex challenges such as armed conflict, pandemics, inequality, and climate emergencies, the UN remains a vital space for diplomacy and action.
