Ramanujacharya Jayanti is a significant annual celebration that honors the birthday of Sri Ramanujacharya, an esteemed South Indian philosopher and theologian. He played a pivotal role in shaping the Bhakti movement and the philosophy of Sri Vaishnavism. According to the Drik Panchang, Sri Ramanujacharya Jayanti falls on the Panchami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Baishakh.

Historical Background

Sri Ramanujacharya was born in 1017 CE in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. He was originally named Lakshmana and also referred to as Ilaya Perumal. He became one of the most significant exponents of Vaishnavism. He dedicated his life to spreading the message of devotion (Bhakti) and service to Lord Vishnu. He passed away in 1137 CE in Srirangam.

Philosophy of Sri Ramanujacharya

One of the key contributions of Sri Ramanujacharya was the development of Vishishtadvaita Vedanta or qualified non-dualism. Unlike Advaita Vedanta, which considers the ultimate reality as the undifferentiated oneness, Ramanujacharya argued that the universe, individual souls (jivatma), and God (Paramatma) are distinct but interconnected.

He emphasized that while all beings are part of God, they retain their individuality, and salvation (moksha) is attained through pure devotion (bhakti) to Lord Vishnu. His teachings have laid the foundation for the Bhakti movement, encouraging followers to embrace devotion selfless service, and ethical living as the means to attain spiritual liberation.

Major Works of Sri Ramanujacharya

Sri Ramanujacharya made great contributions to Hindu philosophy through his writings. His Vedartha Sangraha explains the Vedas in a clear and simple way, helping people understand their deeper meaning. Sri Bhashya is his detailed commentary on the Brahma Sutras, which forms the foundation of Vishishtadvaita Vedanta.

In Bhagavad Gita Bhashya, he highlights devotion (bhakti) as the key to spiritual growth. He also wrote the Gadyas, a set of hymns including Saranagati Gadyam, Sriranga Gadyam, and Vaikuntha Gadyam, that teach the importance of the complete surrender to God. His works continue to guide and inspire devotees on their spiritual path.

Legacy of Sri Ramanujacharya

Sri Ramanujacharya’s influence extends far beyond religious boundaries. His teachings have shaped not only the Sri Vaishnavism tradition but also the broader Bhakti movement in India. His philosophy promotes inclusivity, emphasizing that devotion to God transcends caste and social barriers.

In his honor, the 216-foot-tall Statue of Equality was inaugurated in Hyderabad in 2022. This magnificent monument symbolizes his vision of social harmony, devotion, and spiritual enlightenment.
