Pasang Lhamu Memorial Day is celebrated every year on Baisakh 10. Pasang Lhamu Sherpa is the first Nepali woman to conquer the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest, inspiring countless individuals across Nepal and beyond. Her legacy is a testament to courage, perseverance, and the spirit of adventure.
The Journey to Reach the Summit
Pasang Lhamu’s journey to the summit of Mount Everest was not an easy one. She attempted the climb three times before finally succeeding on Baisakh 10, 2050 BS. This time, she reached the summit through the South Col route. She made history and achieved the extraordinary feat of becoming the first Nepali woman to stand atop the world’s tallest mountain. Her achievement was monumental, especially in a society where women were often restricted from taking on roles considered “too daring” or “too risky.”
Sadly, during her descent from the summit, Pasang Lhamu lost her life. But her legacy lives on, not only in her achievement but also in the doors she opened for other women in Nepal and around the world. Pasang Lhamu continues to inspire countless individuals to dream big and aim high.
Empowering Women
Pasang Lhamu Memorial Day is more than a commemoration of her mountaineering achievement – it is a day to celebrate her role in empowering women and bringing global attention to Nepal’s mountaineering potential.
The government of Nepal issued a commemorative postage stamp in her honor, and the Pasang Lhamu Highway was named after her. She remains a national symbol of determination, bravery, and the heights that Nepali women can achieve.
