On Jestha 3, 2050 B.S., Nepal lost two of its politicians, Madan Kumar Bhandari and Jeevraj Ashrit, in a mysterious jeep accident at Dasdhunga, Chitwan. In their memory, Madan–Ashrit Memorial Day is observed every year on this date.

Madan Bhandari is remembered as a dynamic and visionary leader in Nepali politics. His formulation of the “People’s Multiparty Democracy” transformed the communist movement in Nepal, making it more people-centered and practical. Through the power of speech, organization, and ideology, he succeeded in reaching and inspiring the masses.

Similarly, Jeevraj Ashrit is regarded as a thoughtful, educated, and humble leader. Not only was he a true academician, but he was also a genuine people’s leader who devoted his life to serving the nation and its citizens.

Madan–Ashrit Memorial Day is not just a remembrance of the two leaders; it is a tribute to their ideals and principles. Their examples of genuine, selfless, and principled leadership continue to inspire Nepal’s political journey and future generations. Their lives teach us to always stand on the side of the people, to translate ideas into action, and to view leadership as a form of service, not privilege.
