The world celebrates Earth Day annually on April 22. Earth Day is a global movement which is dedicated to protecting our environment and promoting sustainability. The theme for Earth Day 2025 is “Our Power, Our Planet” which highlights the crucial role of renewable energy in tackle climate change and ensuring a sustainable future.

The History and Importance of Earth Day

Earth Day was first established in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. senator from Wisconsin, due to increasing environmental concerns. It started out as a grassroots movement, and now it has evolved into a global effort advocating for policy change, increasing environmental awareness, and encouraging sustainable actions.

The Need for Action: Climate Change and Environmental Degradation

From rising global temperatures to deforestation, pollution, and loss of biodiversity, the environmental challenges we face today need immediate attention and action. Nepal’s varied topography and social vulnerability make it particularly vulnerable to geological and climate-related disasters. In recent years, there has been an increase in soil erosion, landslides, flash floods, and droughts, which have severely affected the lives and livelihoods of Nepalese communities.

Governments, organizations and individuals should work together to reduce carbon emission, protect natural resources and implement sustainable solutions to combat these challenges.

Actions Beyond April 22nd: A Year-Round Commitment

Although Earth Day serves as an important annual reminder, sustainability should be a continuous effort. Small, consistent actions like reducing energy consumption, choosing sustainable products, and raising awareness can make a significant impact in the long run.

This Earth Day, let’s work to restore, protect, and sustain our planet for future generations.
