The history of Rastriya Dharmasabha Diwas is deeply intertwined with Nepal’s cultural and religious evolution. Around 1904 AD (Bikram Sambat 1961), then Prime Minister Chandra Shamsher called upon scholars and learned individuals from across the country to convene for a week-long “Dharmasabha” (religious assembly). This assembly made significant decisions regarding Nepal’s religious, cultural, and calendrical structures. It laid the institutional foundation for the systematic management of dates, festivals, and religious practices.

Since 2009 AD (Bikram Sambat 2066), the fourth day of the waning moon in the month of Bhadra has been observed annually as Rastriya Dharmasabha Diwas. Various programs are organized across Nepal, including gatherings of scholars, discussions on calendar calculations, exchanges of religious messages, and decisions on the preservation of traditional rituals. This day is not merely a commemoration of the past but also a means to ensure continuity in contemporary religious and cultural practices.

Rastriya Dharmasabha Diwas has played a crucial role in preserving Nepal’s diverse cultural and religious heritage. By systematizing calendrical decisions, it ensures the accuracy and sanctity of dates, festivals, and rituals. It also promotes Vedic-Sanatan traditions, ancient values, and the message of religious tolerance. By fostering unity in diversity, this day inspires Nepali society to take pride in its unique cultural identity.
